Data curation strategy: The ICPSR curation staff curates deposited data and assesses which components of the data should be distributed. Costs: 1. ICPSR prefers to obtain data at low or no cost; however, the value of the data to membership can outweigh acquisition and other expected costs that might be incurred in processing and preservation. 2.ICPSR may acquire commercially produced data when they are available at reasonable cost to the membership.

Formats

Accepted metadata formats: Dublin Core, DDI - Data Documentation Initiative
Accepted file formats: ICPSR encourages depositors to submit data files as SAS, SPSS, or Stata files. ASCII files are also acceptable as long as they are accompanied with setup files. Datasets in other formats are accepted as well. Each variable in the data collection should have a set of exhaustive, mutually-exclusive codes. Variable labels and value labels should clearly describe the information or question recorded in that variable. Missing data codes should be defined. Please note that ICPSR can accept data with identifying information under conditions consistent with the consent of the study participants and the relevant Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval. Long term guarantees: For long-term preservation, data are stored in accordance with prevailing standards and practice.
